Veteran Story: Joe Fletcher (1891-1964) was born in Traveston (Burrum Heads) to Englishman Edward Fletcher and Mary Ann, and Aboriginal woman. The family were farming cane at Tatura when Fletcher volunteered in September 1914. Joe served with his battalion on Gallipoli and later in France in major operations in the Western Front, including Pozieres and Bullecourt, before being returned home. After the war he married Pauline Hartnett, and farmed at Nagoorin, later he moved to the Gladstone/Yarwun area, where he started up a small fruit farm in the Targinnie area, east of Yarwun.
