Veteran Story:  Jack Oliffe (1893-1958) was born to Jack Oliffe and Maria Major and been working as a station hand at Claverton Station, near Wyandra when he volunteered in July 1917. Assigned to the 20th Reinforcements for the 11th Light Horse Regiment, Oliffe embarked for Egypt with a number of other Indigenous enlistments, namely - David MOLLOY, James McBRIDE, William Nicholls, Jack Pollard, Charlie Parkes, Edward Smith, Joe White and Fred Collins. This unit became known as the 'Queensland Black Watch' as all but three of the unit were of Aboriginal heritage. Ollife joined his regiment in the field in May 1918 when they were operating out of Jericho, undertaking long range patrols in the Jordan Valley. Oliffe returned home in August 1919 and was granted and exemption from the 'Aborigines Protection Act' in 1920. He returned to his work at Claverton Station.
