Since launching the site, we have been gathering and researching information to add to the veterans already featured. From today, you will begin to notice updates appearing daily. We are now ready to fill gaps in existing records and add newly identified Indigenous veterans.
Our research leads us to many online sources as we search for the names of those who have served. Television news, radio interviews, and documentaries often reveal the names of people who are currently serving or have served in the past. Books are another valuable source, and we will endeavour to acknowledge where our information comes from.
We have also been researching veterans to confirm Apical Ancestry. As mentioned previously, we do not intend to duplicate work already completed by the Australian War Memorial in this area. So far, we have traced family lines connected to surnames such as Bowes, Cowen, Perfect, Williams, Bamblett, and Goldspink, among many others. Once ancestry has been confirmed, we can confidently upload the information we have found and note this on the soldier’s record.
To help this project grow, we need your support in identifying Indigenous veterans. More than 14,600 people have served or are currently serving, so gathering this information is a major task. If you have veterans in your family, please let us know so they can be included on this important website. This is the only website dedicated exclusively to Indigenous servicemen and women.
Each week, I will post the names of newly added veterans and updated records, so please keep checking the site for your own veteran. You can also email us so we can add your veteran sooner. We are currently focusing on Queensland and New South Wales, but we welcome information from all regions.
