Veteran Story: Joe White (1888-1962?) was born in Morven, south-west Queensland, home to the Bidjara people; he married Nina Amos in 1909. White volunteered in August 1917, at age 30 and after training at Rifle Range Camp, Enoggera, was assigned to the 20th Reinforcements for the 11th Light Horse Regiment and left Australia in December 1917. This unit became known as the 'Queensland Black Watch' as all but three of its members were of Aboriginal heritage. On arrival in Egypt Joe became ill and was admitted to hospital at Port Said. Unable to clear his condition, a stricture, the medical authorities declared him unfit for active service in the field and should be repatriated for treatment. White returned home in July 1918 and was medically discharged.
