Veteran Story: Walter Smale (1896-1915) was born at Freetown, near Warwick, to Alfred Smale and Emily Thorne. Walter volunteered in December 1914 and was assigned to the 3rd Reinforcements for the 2nd Light Horse Regiment. After training at Enoggera the reinforcements embarked on HMAT 'Itria' bound for Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Righetti in February 1915. They were transported to the Gallipoli Peninsula in July 1915 joining their unit while in reserve, at Pope's Hill a ridge lying at the centre of Monash Valley. In the early hours of 7 August the regiment made an attack on Quinn's Post, it was here that Walter Smale, age 19 was killed in action and is believed to have been later buried. Quinn's Post Cemetery and memorial records the names of soldiers thought to be buried in the cemetery.
