Veteran Story: William was born in Taroom Qld and registered as William Ah Tee. He enlisted in the AIF and took his oath on the 5th November 1915. Initially assigned to the 10th Bn, transferred to the 21st Bn on 21/2/1916, and then to the 41st Bn. Prior to leaving Australia he committed an offence of "Breaking away from Quarters", and was given forfeiture of 20 days pay. He left Sydney aboard the Troopship HT Demosthenes on 16/5/1916 arriving in Plymouth England on 20/7/1916. On 9/10/1916 while still in England at training camp he was admitted to hospital suffering with Influenza and discharged to duty on 22/11/1916. He proceeded overseas to France with the 41st Bn on 24/11/1916. In April 1917 whilst in the field in France he again had a hospital admission this time suffering from Bronchitis. He rejoined his battalion on 6/8/1917 and not long after on the 17/8/1916 he was back in hospital suffering from Influenza. Not able to shake the disease he was transferred to England by Hospital train diagnosed with Bronchial Asthma. He found it hard to recover and spent the month in hospital before being classified as medically unfit for active service and reclassified for Home Service. He left England on 27/8/1917 aboard HT 82, arriving in Sydney and being discharged on 21/11/1917. William and Evelyn divorced on his return and in 1925 he married Lillian Ericksen. He was a carpenter by trade and became well known in the Toowoomba area with a keen interest in race horse. He died in 1973.
