Veteran Story: Wakka Wakka man John Cobbo (1897-1942) was born in Kilkivan, to Winifred Boloong and Robin Cobbo and first voluteered to serve in August 1917 but was rejected on the grounds of 'insufficient European parentage' and discharged. Cobbo reapplied in June 1918 and became a member of the Australian Remount Unit, training in Victoria before departing for Egypt in September. Here he was transferred to the 5th Light Horse Regiment which remained in the Middle East after the armistice was declared in October 1918. The Light Horse were deployed as a garrison unit to quell the Egyptian Revolt early in 1919 before they returned home in June that year.
