Veteran Story: Kullilli man Joe Fitzroy (1896-1959) was born at Eulo to Jeannie 'Jinnie' Mossman and Charlie Fitzroy. In 1917 he was employed as a stockman at Dynevor Downs Station when he volunteered in July 1917. Fitzroy trained at Rifle Range Camp, Enoggera before travelling to Sydney by troop train in December 1917. Assigned to the 20th Reinforcements for the 11th Light Horse Regiment, he embarked with a number of other Indigenous recruits, including Frederick Burnett, Harry Doyle, William Brown, John Geary and James Lingwoodock. These reinforcements became known as the "Queensland Black Watch" as all but three of the unit were of Aboriginal heritage. Fitzroy joined the regiment at Selmeh, near Jaffa after being hospitalised with mumps contracted on the voyage. After two months of long patrols and rigorous conditions, Fitzroy was evacuated to hospital with Malaria, he rejoined his unit in Palestine a month later and remained in the Middle East until being repatriated home in July 1919. Fitzroy returned to his work as a stockman in northern Queensland, he died in 1959 age 63.
