Veteran Story: Alfred Blackman (1881-1917) was born in Tiaro to Thomas Blackman and Emily Deshong of Apple Tree Creek. Alfred enlisted in Maryborough in January 1917 and was assigned to the 41st Infantry Battalion. He embarked one month later aboard the 'Wiltshire' for England. He joined his battalion in France in July 1917 and during operations at Zonnebeke on 4 October, Alfred was wounded in the neck with shrapnel; he died 4 days later at the 7th Canadian General Hospital, Etaples. Alfred Blackman was buried at the soldiers cemetery, Etaples Military Cemetery; his name is also located at panel 133 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
